Travel and Photo Stories

Storytelling

I want my photography to tell a story through an image. Each face, still life, landscape, and candid shot expresses an emotion, is part of nature, or just a face that I find so appealing that I must capture it on my camera. I hope you enjoy my musings and observations of life as seen through my photography.

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is one of the most visited of the 63 National Parks in the U. S. The summer months have the peak of crowds but Autumn is still full of visitors. We still had trouble finding parking space for some of the more popular spots and just had to do a drive by. If you go, get up early and get yourself on the road. A visit to the popular Cadillac Mountain now requires an appointment. Great idea.

The Fall Colors road trip that we did in 2021 was highly anticipated. Covid precautions were still in effect and this was going to be our first travel since February of 2020. My Canadian partner and I were still challenged with travel and border restrictions. We had been separated for seven months in 2020. When we did our Fall trip, my partner still could not cross the U.S. border by land, only by air. The car we wanted to use was in Canada. So I had to drive the car to my home in the Chicago area and then he joined me by air. First world problems, I know.

A walk in the woods

The photo featured above is one of my favorite from this trip, although I got some really spectacular landscape shots. I’m a sucker for a silhouette. The one in this image is of my partner walking through the woods ahead of me. The reason he was so far ahead of me is he was in a hurry for a very specific reason….the moment when you’re in the middle of nature and nature calls. When I saw him silhouetted against the beautiful morning sky framed by towering trees in their full autumn splendor I had to take the shot. Right? A photographer always takes advantage of good light no matter the circumstances.

Jordan Pond

If you were to ask me which location in Acadia National Park I liked the best, I’d have to go with Jordon Pond. It’s probably one of the most photographed spots as well. But that’s not the reason it’s my favorite. It’s because of the Popover with Maine strawberry jam and butter at the restaurant there. Four Dollars! Best money you will ever spend. We ordered other food there but for the life of me I cannot remember what it was. Get thee to Jordan Pond, get there early (there’s always a long wait) and order the Popover. You will love me forever.

Cadillac Mountain

My second favorite place was Cadillac Mountain. We tried unsuccessfully to visit it our first day in the park. Impossible. That’s when we found out you needed a reservation during the peak months of May through October. (Okay, so I’m not the best at trip planning. But Hey! You’re here for the photography! ) We picked an early morning time and were rewarded with plenty of parking spaces and spectacular views of Frenchman Bay and the beautiful town of Bar Harbor. The latter is also a place not to miss.

Since Autumn is fast approaching I will be covering more photos of that trip in 2021. I hope you follow along!

  1. Loved your description of Acadia National Park and your pics. Was talking to Don about the 30,000 islands of Georgian Bay and North Channel areas in Ontario. I have boated and anchored in numerous areas where it seems like we are the only ones in the world to have been there. It’s a beautiful and wonderful new perspective on life in general. Sitting in a secluded spot in the middle of a bay surrounded with granite cliffs several hundred feet high gazing at the myriad stars and northern lights. Even made better with the one you love by your side sipping wine. Those are times that will be with me for the rest of my life.
Be well Patty and look forward to your return. I’ll keep in touch.

I think you got the better side of your “partner”.
